What Information Is Needed When Ordering Welding Electrodes?

A clear stick-electrode request identifies the process, required classification, diameter, length, packaging and quantity, with the applicable WPS or project requirements.

When ordering welding electrodes, a description such as “welding electrodes” — or even a classification name on its own — is usually not enough to define the item. A clear request identifies the welding process, documented classification, diameter, length, packaging, quantity and delivery location, and references the WPS or project documents when they govern the selection.

These details help procurement and technical teams work from the same item definition and reduce the need to return to the request later for a missing size, package format or technical requirement before a supply quotation can be prepared.

1. Start by identifying SMAW stick electrodes

The first line of the request should clearly identify both the consumable and process: a coated electrode for Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), or Stick Welding. This separates the request from MIG wire, TIG filler products and flux-cored wire.

If the project uses a specific process name or abbreviation in its controlled documents, use the same wording in the purchase request so the procurement item can be matched easily with the technical documentation.

2. State the required classification exactly as documented

Classification is one of the most important ordering fields, but it should not be inferred from a broad description such as “for steel” or “for stainless.” If the WPS, project specification or approved material documentation gives a particular classification, copy that requirement into the purchase request together with the applicable classification system or specification when stated.

If a product data sheet lists more than one standard or classification, do not assume that one is automatically interchangeable with another. The controlling reference is the technical document applicable to the project or approved product.

3. Do not leave diameter and length implicit

Classification alone does not define electrode size. The same classification may be supplied in different diameters or lengths, so diameter and length should be treated as separate ordering fields.

If the WPS specifies electrode diameter, use the approved value from that procedure. If electrode length is part of the purchase specification or is needed to standardize the item used on site, include it as well instead of relying on a default supply option.

4. Specify packaging, not only the total weight

Packaging is a practical part of the item definition, not only a logistics detail. Products can differ in package format, unit weight and outer packing, so it is useful to state the required package type and unit quantity or weight whenever the project has a defined requirement.

HAM lists stick welding electrodes as a dedicated welding-consumables category. Package selection should follow the requirement of the project and the data for the actual product rather than a general assumption applied to every electrode.

5. Express quantity in an unambiguous unit

A line that says “20 required” is incomplete unless it states whether the quantity means 20 kilograms, 20 packs or 20 cartons. Write the unit explicitly and connect it to the selected package format when the requirement is calculated by pack count.

For recurring requirements, procurement can also state expected consumption or planned supply batches when relevant, without mixing the technical item definition with unrelated commercial conditions.

6. Attach the WPS and project documents when they control selection

Where the work is governed by a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) or a project technical specification, procurement should not recreate those technical requirements from memory. Attach the applicable controlled document, or state its reference and revision used by the project, and identify any documentation required for technical review.

Depending on the project, the request may also call for a product data sheet or specific quality or traceability documents. State those requirements explicitly instead of assuming that every electrode or every supplier provides the same document package.

7. Include the delivery location

Once the item and quantity are defined, add the required delivery city or project location. This does not change the technical classification of the electrode, but it completes the supply request and allows the quotation to be based on the actual destination.

If the purchase request contains several welding-product categories, the broader welding supplies and consumables range can be reviewed first, with each consumable then listed as a separate line item with its own specification and quantity.

What fields should a stick-electrode line item contain?

Field What to enter Why it matters
FieldConsumable and process What to enterCoated electrode / SMAW or Stick Why it mattersSeparates the request from wires and consumables for other processes
FieldClassification What to enterThe classification stated by the applicable project or product document Why it mattersDefines the technical requirement without relying on a generic name
FieldReference specification What to enterAWS, EN ISO or another standard when required and stated by the reference Why it mattersReduces ambiguity where different classification systems are used
FieldDiameter What to enterThe diameter defined by the WPS or project request Why it mattersOne classification may be supplied in more than one diameter
FieldLength What to enterRequired electrode length when specified Why it mattersDistinguishes size options within the same classification
FieldPackaging What to enterPackage type and unit weight or quantity where required Why it mattersAllows the same supply format to be compared and planned
FieldQuantity What to enterA clear value and unit: kg, packs or another defined unit Why it mattersPrevents different interpretations of the requested quantity
FieldWPS / project reference What to enterThe applicable controlled reference or file Why it mattersConnects procurement with the actual technical requirements
FieldRequired documents What to enterDocuments explicitly required by the project Why it mattersMakes documentation requirements visible before quotation
FieldDelivery location What to enterRequired city or project location Why it mattersCompletes the supply request

Example of a clear stick-electrode request

This example demonstrates request structure; it does not recommend an electrode classification or size for a particular application:

Required item: Coated welding electrodes for SMAW.
Classification: As specified in the attached WPS.
Reference specification: As stated in the WPS.
Diameter: As defined by the applicable WPS line item.
Length: As required by the item specification.
Packaging: Packs meeting the project purchase requirement.
Quantity: 80 kg total.
Project reference: Attached WPS and its approved revision.
Required documents: As listed in the attached project document schedule.
Delivery location: Riyadh.

The useful distinction is that procurement has not tried to select an electrode grade on behalf of the welding team. It has transferred the approved technical requirement into a purchase line that can be reviewed and compared consistently.

What is not enough when ordering welding electrodes?

Two quotations are difficult to compare on the same basis when the request only says “industrial welding electrodes,” gives a diameter without a classification, or states a classification while leaving packaging and quantity undefined. A package photo or trade name also does not replace classification, size and technical-reference data when the project requires those fields.

If the requirement has not yet reached the item-ordering stage, the Welding Consumables Selection Guide by Process and Metal provides broader context for choosing the consumable category before defining the purchase line.

Storage and handling: follow the actual product documentation

Electrode storage and handling requirements are not one universal numeric rule for every product. After a specific product is approved, follow its manufacturer instructions and the applicable site quality procedure, including any packaging or post-opening handling requirements. A purchase request should therefore not be used as a generic drying or storage recipe.

Before sending the request

Review the line item once more: Is the process clear? Was the classification taken from the correct reference? Are diameter, length, packaging and quantity defined? Have the applicable WPS, project reference and required documents been included where relevant? A request containing those fields gives technical and procurement teams a much clearer common basis for review.

You can review HAM’s stick welding electrode category and submit the required specification, quantity and delivery location for a supply quotation.
